Pennine problems – an oily tour of Northern England

It’s good when a plan comes together, unfortunately this wasn’t one of those occasions. It began when we decided to start our July 2000 camping tour by catching a train to Sheffield. Tickets were booked before we found out that Northern Spirit don’t carry tandems, getting the refund kept Karen busy for a couple of hours!

A Landescape Experience Part II – The Pub Crawl

We didn’t intend to do a tandem tour in 2005, too busy with the new business and we’d already had a couple of holidays earlier in the year plus some good weekends, it should have been enough for one year. However, you can’t have too many holidays and having accidentally bought a new Landescape in August, we felt it was only right to give it a reasonable test ride.

A Landescape Experience – Part 1 – The York Connection

The weather was forecast to be dire for the Friday of this year’s York Cycle Rally, so we dug out the waterproofs, risked the weather and cycled the 22 miles anyway. We went on our old and occasionally reliable Dawes Supergalaxy, a first outing for the trailer that we’d bought a year previously and never got around to using.

Pyrenean Raid

This time last year I was sitting outside a fabulous little hotel in Larrau in the Pyrenees drinking a cold, well earned glass of beer.

Fred Whitton Challenge on a Tandem 2006

There are a fair few write-ups of Fred Whitton Challenge rides on the internet, and very good they are too. They’re what got us interested in it in the first place.

Konrad Orlowski (On the left) and Allan Nelson (On the right) This one’s written from the perspective of a couple of “over-50’s” who potter about the Lakes on a tandem most weekends and fancied having a go at something a bit challenging. So, last winter, we decided to start ‘getting the miles in’ for the event. Luckily we had a couple of friends, one of whom was also going to ride, and they’re a tad faster than us – and much better on hills, so that gave us a bit of an incentive and kept us pushed most of the time. Of course not everything went to plan and I well remember one Sunday training ride in February which had to be cut short due to snow. Still a very enjoyable ride though and one we won’t forget.

An introduction to Tandem riding

Not so long ago tandems almost vanished apart from a few die-hards who wouldn’t let the pastime die.

Today there is a renaissance in tandeming as more and more people find joy in the togetherness that tandeming can bring to friends, partners, family or those who previously were unable to cycle.
