Tandem Ride around Rutland Water (Empingham Reservoir)

The route is a circuit of 17 miles unless you ride around the peninsula, which adds on another 6 miles, however, it is well worth the extra ride.
If you get bored of the ride around the reservoir you can also take a small diversion and visit the Rutland town of Oakham, which is on the edge of the reservoir.

The route follows the old railway track bed from Whitby to Scarborough, which, in most parts is surface with old ash, however there are some areas where there are bricks, tarmac, in some places uneven farm tracks crossing the line and finally in Scarborough a made up foot/cycle path.

From Martin and Yvonne of the Ripon Loiterers
Martin – “Fancy Edinburgh for the weekend?”
Yvonne – “that sounds nice, you mean on the new Santana tandem of course“.
And that was how this all started. The comment in the title was made by a colleague, and as he gets the Ripon Loiterers emails he will remember making it.

The plan was to cycle there on the pretty route i.e. no main roads all the way, and then get the train back. Apart from one or two mishaps (read on) that is what we did.
