As you all Know a tandem partnership is based on old Naval terminology.
So we have on the front, the captain, and in the engine room the good old stoker,
who is the power House of the tandem.
The Captain being in charge (or so he/she thinks), well he is. He does change gear, steer and apply the brakes sometimes
Now down here we have a Pub called Sippers just outside Millbay Docks with a rather approriate menu.
Well one can choose either the Captains Mixed Grill or the Stokers Mixed Grill.
Stokers consists of one 16oz steak, one 12 oz gammon steak, two 4oz lamb chops, two sausages, two eggs chips and onions all for £18.99 plus £1 for sauce.
Now see what the captains gets:- one 8oz steak, one 6oz gammon steak, one 4oz lamb chop, one sausage, one egg, chips and onions, for about a tenner plus £1 for the sauce
Does this imply that Captains don’t put in that much effort, I certainly couldn’t eat all that anyway, as there is no carbohydrate in there.

We once did a ride called the aptly named “Fish and Chip” ride over to Robin Hoods Bay. After F&Cs and the climb out of the Bay everyone went quiet. After asking what was up, it turned out everyone had eaten far too much of the bad stuff and had blown. We came round a few hours though!!
Yes you are right Jonathan, the wrong food is counter productive.
We all learn the hard way don’t we. But fish and chips are very nice though no good as race food.
Ruth would know, and the mentioning of the coast to coast is true. I remember John and myself (and some others) attempting a c2c (mtb) in 24h and getting the old bonk at 3am, fish and chips would have broken the eating at speed record then believe me!!! Ruth watched me at my lowest point
When we first got the tandem we came up with a ‘great’ plan. We were having a company bash after work as a cafe we knew were offering to feed and ‘water’ us for free in exchange for a job we’d done for them.
We turned up, ate and ate and ate - it was a tapas menu and the food just kept on comming, drank gallons of free beer and eventually set off home.
The canal bank was mildly uncomfortable - cycling with full bellies is not to be reccomended, but when we came to climb the 1 in 3 hill (just under a mile of climbing) we both thought we were going to die before we reached the top.
