Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to wear a helmet for my discover tandeming day?

It’s is entirely up to the individual person, helmets are not law in the UK.  Our advice is that you should and we have helmets available to borrow.

I don’t have any cycle specific clothing, what should I wear for my discover tandeming day?

Whatever you feel comfortable in, avoid jeans or anything tight with bulky seams.  We do stock a great range of clothing, so you would be able to make a purchase if you wish before your ride.

Do I need to bring along a pump and spare tube etc?

No we provide a rack pack with tools, a lock and a map; there is also space for you to put a phone, waterproof etc in the pack.

What pedals will be fitted to the tandem/s we are going to ride?

Our tandems are fitted with flat pedals on the front and rear with strapless toe clips on the rear as well which are useful to stop your feet coming off the pedals.  If you use Shimano SPD’s we have plenty available just bring your cycling shoes. If you use anything else it would be wise to bring them along.

Should I bring my own saddle?

It shouldn’t be necessary our tandems are fitted with comfortable saddles, but if you have a specific preference feel free to bring your saddle along.

Can we go out for the whole day on the tandem?

Yes, if you are test riding with a view to buying, then allow enough time to ride all the models you are interested in.

I can’t ride a bike at all; will I be able to ride on the back of a tandem?

Absolutely, all the control and balance is the responsibility of the front rider.

Do we both have to pedal at the same time?

On most tandem yes, it is very unusual to need independent pedalling, but we do have tandems that allow that to happen.

My partner is a lot fitter than me, how does this affect riding a tandem?

It doesn’t, that’s the beauty of tandem riding.  For example if you have a rider who normally averages 20 mph and the other rider normally averages 10 mph, then the chances are as a combined team you’ll be riding at 15 mph.

Do I need to book in if I want a test ride?

Not always, but it is always wise to check our opening times before setting off.  And to guarantee availability of particular models then booking is essential. Also please note there are times when we are closed or fully booked.
